The Firstborn (Exodus 13:1–2)

These couple of verses reiterate a theme that is actually present throughout the Hebrew Bible. The “principle of the firstborn” emerges from this Passover experience, with all firstborn males of both humans and animals committed to YHWH. It is a simple idea, mentioned almost in passing. The first of everything is meant to be given to YHWH as a reminder of his provision to us.
