Now Boaz had gone up to the gate and sat down there. And behold, the redeemer, of whom Boaz had spoken, came by. So Boaz said, “Turn aside, friend; sit down here.” And he turned aside and sat down. And he took ten men of the elders of the city and said, “Sit down here.” So they sat down.
The Gospel Coalition had a good article today on the need for the church to include youth in congregations rather than segregating them out as a special “ministry”. Worth reading.

When Ruth returns from the fields with an ephah of barley, Naomi is surprised. And why wouldn’t she be surprised? Ruth gleaned the equivalent of a day’s work for someone who was supposed to be harvesting in the field. It is clear that someone noticed her and provided for her.

Finally, we meet Boaz. His name means “quickness” or “swiftness” and as I mentioned in the last post, he is a mighty man in the clan of Elimelech.
He greets his reapers with יְהוָה עִמָּכֶם (YHWH ‘ēmakam, literally “YHWH be among you”), to which they reply יְבָרֶכְךָ יְהוָה (abarak-ak YHWH, “blessings of YHWH”). Apparently, this was a traditionally greeting among the Judahites at the time, meant to convey an allegiance to YHWH – their God. Living in a truly pluralistic society where there were many gods, it was important that people remained their allegiance to the God of Judah.
