If you are a follower of Jesus Christ, someone who has accepted Him as Savior, Master and Model, then you are part of the Church. The Church is made up of everyone who has made the commitment to accept Jesus and follow Him.
But the Church is made up of churches or congregations. These are local assemblies of believers who have joined together to accomplish the work of Jesus’ gospel. In our Defining Documents, we say it this way: The local church is the organized, visible assembly of believers, empowered by God’s Holy Spirit and headed by Christ. (John 20:22-23; Acts 2:1-12; 1 Cor 1:2, 12:13; Gal 1:2; Eph 1:22-23, 4:3-6; Col 1:18)
While anyone is welcome to worship and serve with us, we believe that there is a level of participation that we call “Covenant Membership.”
Covenant members are people who believe that Bedford Road is the congregation God has brought them to. They enter a covenant with the other members to support the ministry of the Gospel at Bedford Road – with their time, talents, and treasures.
In order to be a covenant member of Bedford Road, you must:
- Publicly confess faith on the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior through baptism by immersion.
- Demonstrate submission to Christ as Lord by joining in the work of the Gospel.
- Live a life transformed by the Gospel, with Jesus as their model.
- Annually reaffirm the Member’s Covenant.
- And have these things confirmed and recognized by the congregation.
What is the difference from simply worshiping and serving as part of the congregation and entering into covenant membership?
To put it simply, covenant membership says that you will shoulder your part of the biblical responsibility of the church. This includes not just worshiping and serving, but also leading. The covenant members of our congregation join together to provide for the ministerial and financial needs of the congregation. We do not take our covenant of membership lightly. We are throwing our lot in with the other members, rising and falling with each other.
